Nearly five years has passed since this small business' website was designed and over that time trends have changed and progress has been made in eCommerce.
Now, after expanding to a second location and catering to Boston's South End, they were ready for a redesign.
The Old vs The New
The Process...
The business owner made it clear that she wanted to elevate her brand to compete with Boston's #1 flower service, Winston Flowers. She also wanted to incorporate her European background and appreciation for high fashion.
Together, we worked to gather and document visual inspiration for the site, the goal was to identify layouts that were familiar and easy for first time users to navigate, and nail down what visual design attributes would best communicate the clients values.
Imagery collected to communicate the client's ideal style.
Designing...
Popular design patterns, such as Instagram's three column layout, were used to create wireframes that first time visitors would find familiar and navigable. For the sake of easy maintenance and usability on behalf of the client, we decided to build the site by modifying an existing Shopify theme. After selecting one that had an intuitive checkout process and navigation we went to work applying our styles and structure.
Product Photography...
One of the qualities I noticed when working with the client was that everything they showed me, exclusively, used high quality studio photography. The client, understandably, wanted there to be no confusion that their floral productions were fashionable works of art and not homespun, or budget quality.
With that in mind, an assistant I and set up a studio and spent two days on-site over the Mother's Day weekend photographing products as they were assembled and sent out for delivery. This resulted in minimizing waste of material, no loss of the client's time, and full creative control of the site's product photography.
